Pets are innocent and loving. They don’t mean to be funny animals, but they make us laugh or smile without trying. Every morning I wake up because a little yellow critter is standing on my neck looking down into my face. No matter how tired or grumpy I am, I can’t help but smile and count that little blessing, be thankful for that big helping of love staring at me even before I open my eyes. What a great way to get going in the morning.

My favorite time each day happens after I’ve gotten into my jammies and have propped the pillows on my bed into reading position. As I nestle in, my three little dogs jump onto the foot of the bed and sit in a row side-by-side staring at me in anticipation. I reach onto the nightstand and grab three rawhide chew bones and hand them to the wagging, wiggling little trio. Each one cuddles into their favorite spot beside me and the gnawing of the rawhide against their teeth begins.

That sound reflects how present that moment is. It’s then that I feel comfort, peace and a sense of simple belonging that fills my heart and time and space with true thankfulness and unending love … until one of them hears a burglar in the front room. With our little critters, it’s all about each blessed moment.
